To calculate monster hit points, I have been using this formula:
(4.5 x (number of hit dice)) + CON bonus.
For NPC's, I have just been putting down whatever HP number was in the AV book. I figured, if Richard Barton wanted that guy to have that many HP, that's good enough for me. For this change, I've gone through all the NPC stat blocks and changed their HP to the Shadowdark formula.
For some NPC's, this makes a huge difference. Here are a few examples:

This is a good dial you can use for your game. If you want the NPC's to have more HP because your players are too good at the game, use the book HP. If you want to go easy on them, use the converted HP I have in the pdf. Except for the high level wizards. They get a boost!
